Pfizer Inc.’s decision to market a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to its patients will save the brand-name drug company $10 billion per year in annual revenue by the end of 2017.
The $10 billion in savings is the biggest single-year cost of Viagra by Pfizer and will pay for the rest of the brand-name drug’s sales, which are expected to reach $1.4 billion by 2027.
The price of Viagra came to $1.46 a pill at the end of last year and has been reported as being significantly higher than Pfizer’s $1.46 in annual revenue.
In a statement, Pfizer said: “The drug’s $10 billion market value is projected to be more than double what is achieved in the U. S. of its previous generation of drugs and its generic version. The fact that Pfizer’s branded products generate a similar market share to the generic version is a reason why this decision is made.”
Pfizer said the loss of the patent on Viagra, which is pending appeal by the U. Food and Drug Administration, will result in an increase in generic sales in the United States by $5.1 billion. It expects the loss of patent protection to result in $1.1 billion in annual revenue in the U. in the next three years.
Pfizer, which has a patent on the drug, said the generic version is already available in the U. for roughly $1 a pill, but that sales in other markets are expected to be higher.

Pfizer is not the first pharmaceutical company to market Viagra as a generic version.
